Whether you’re a new couple or have been married for years, you should be going on regular dates. Personally, Cole and I like to have a date night every week! It’s really important to us to take the time to focus on our relationship. Even after a few years, continuing to date one another is a way to keep the romance alive. It’s our opinion that complacency is one of the major things that destroys a relationship, so that’s why we’ve made it our goal to keep date night a priority, no matter what else might be going on in our lives. However, we realize that dating can be expensive, so here are some of our favorite fun date ideas for couples on a budget!
Cost: $0.00 – $20.00
One of our favorite date nights is a movie marathon at home. We usually save this for a weekend so that we don’t have to get up early the next morning. Pick your favorite movies, throw on some pajamas, cuddle up on the couch and start watching! This is great because there’s a lot of versatility. For example, you could each pick your favorite movie (a fantastic idea for new couples!), or you could pick a series that you both want to watch, or you could pick x number of Disney movies… the list goes on and on!
We’ve listed a potential cost for this idea of up to $20.00 for a few reasons. First, if you want to watch a movie that you don’t have, you can check out your TV provider’s OnDemand channels, visit a local Redbox, or find another movie streaming service. Second, if you want to make things a little more romantic, you could get a bottle of your significant other’s favorite wine to share. Or, if you’re more interested in food than wine, you could put together a small meal or purchase some snacks from the store. Whatever you want to do, we are confident that this will become a favorite date for you, too!
Picnic at the Park
Cost: $10.00 – $30.00
This is an idea that would be best during the spring or fall, when the temperatures are pleasant. We highly recommend surprising your partner with this idea! Put together a picnic lunch or dinner and sneak the food into your car. Don’t tell your significant other where you’re going until you’re there – and then pull out the food and a blanket for a nice picnic.
For this idea, we would definitely recommend that you do your research beforehand. Make sure that the park you have chosen has some relatively secluded areas for you to choose from for your picnic location. Cole and I like to have a little privacy so that we aren’t distracted or interrupted by the hustle and bustle of passersby. Also, make sure that you check the weather before you plan this date. It would be really unfortunate to get there only to be rained on! Finally, bring bug spray, especially if you go out at a time of year when bugs are common. With those things in mind, we’re sure that you’ll enjoy yourself!
Go on a Drive
Cost: $10.00 – $30.00
I have to preface this with a suggestion to make sure that you have a GPS or a smartphone with you on this date, just in case you end up lost. Now, pick a starting location. This can be the center of your nearest town, your home, or any other location. Then, start driving in any direction. Every five minutes, roll a six-sided dice to determine if you will turn at the next intersection. If you roll a 1 or 4, turn left; 2 or 5, turn right; 3 or 6, go straight.
The greatest thing about this is finding new places that you might not have known about otherwise. If you see something interesting off the road, stop and check it out (but remember not to trespass on any private property!). If you come across any restaurants that sound interesting, go on in for a bite to eat. Or, if you just want to drive, then just keep going for a while! There’s no telling what you’ll find. This is a great way to unplug for a while and just chat with your partner – or, if you’re like us, you can have a karaoke party in the car!
Home Dance Party
Have you ever wanted to go out and dance, but either don’t want to spend the money or don’t want to interact with anyone besides your partner? Or maybe you, like us, are continually discouraged by the fact that “dancing” doesn’t really seem to mean the same thing nowadays as what it used to. Well, this idea is for you! We’re willing to bet that you’re subscribed to some kind of free or paid music streaming service (such as Pandora, Spotify, and Napster), so just connect your phone or computer to some speakers and get to dancing!
There are several great things about this idea. For one, you’re not spending any additional money. Even if you pay for a music streaming service like Napster, you’re not spending any more money to use it for this idea than you’d spend anyway. Another thing is you don’t have to leave home. This means that you can eat or drink whatever you’d like (we’d recommend whatever you have on hand to avoid spending money). You can also wear whatever you want. If you want to put on your best dress or suit and twirl around as though you’re at an A-list party, then you can do that! Alternately, if you just want to dance around like a dork in your underwear, you can do that, too! Quick, easy, and versatile, we highly recommend this date idea.
Video Game Night
Cost: $0.00 – $25.00
If you like video games at all, then a video game date night is going to be right up your alley. If your partner doesn’t know how to play, this is the time to teach them. Or, if you’re both gamers, then you can make this into a fun competition or play a cooperative game. There are a ton of options for this! You can play on- or offline, alone or with others, and so much more. Cole and I even like to play games sitting right next to each other, so if we don’t want to play the same thing or if we want to play a game without cooperative or competitive play, we can! You can often play video games together even if you aren’t in the same physical location, so this could be a great long-distance date.
Not sure what to play? No problem! We have some great suggestions for you. If you’re looking for cooperative play but don’t want to go up against other people online, then we highly recommend any of the Borderlands games. You can link up with your significant other locally and play together, battling the same opponents and completing the same quests. If you want to cooperatively compete against others, Rocket League can be super fun. Cole and I always have a blast with this game, even though I’m really bad and he always ends up carrying our team. Pokémon games can be fun to play together, as well. Even though these are mostly single-player games, you can battle each other or trade Pokémon, if you so choose. We’ll probably talk more about video games for couples in another post, so keep a lookout! In the meantime, enjoy this awesome date idea!
