After months of torment, it’s finally the most wonderful time of the year again! Finals. Are. Over!
Now, some of you may be wondering why I’m so excited. After all, I graduated in May, so I don’t have to deal with the special week of hell that finals are. And you’d be right – I don’t have finals anymore… but Cole does. And as bad as my finals always were, I’ve got to tell y’all that engineering exams are infinitely worse than anything my biology professors could dream up. I mean, just look at these equations:
Yeah, I don’t know what the squiggly lines mean, either.
In honor of the end of fall semester, we’ve decided to help y’all out a little. It’s almost Christmas break, and we know you’re looking for ways to spend those many extra hours of your day that are normally taken up by reading and studying (and crying). We’ve compiled a list of seven things that we’re excited to do now that finals are over. We think you’ll be excited about them, too!
I know this sounds boring, but it’s actually one of my favorite things on this list. If y’all are like me, you spent most of finals week in a delirious haze thanks to sleep deprivation. Caffeine has become your best friend, and your eyelid has developed a twitch that you’re starting to think might be permanent. But now that finals are over, it’s time to relax a little! Go to sleep before two a.m. Stay in bed later than six a.m. Or p.m. Whichever you prefer. Treat yourself with some new pillows and just sleep.
Go on a Date
After you catch up on sleep and shed some of the insanity that exhaustion brought on (but not all of it because, let’s be honest, a little crazy is fun!), grab your significant other and go on a nice, romantic date! There’s nothing more fulfilling than a night out with a loved one after a week or two of shushing him from across the room since you’re so busy feverishly writing that last-minute paper. (In case you’re wondering, yes – that was me.) Single? No worries! Grab some friends and grab some dinner or go see a movie. Chances are, they’ve missed seeing your face since it’s been buried in those books. Get out of the house and go have some fun!
Play a Game
Now y’all know how Cole and I feel about video games, so you know that this one just had to be on our list! Before I started working, we would stay up all hours of the night playing together. Last winter, I believe we played a lot of Borderlands, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, and Dragon Age: Inquisition. This year, we’re thrilled to bits to have some free time to try to finish Pokémon Sun and Moon! If video games aren’t really your thing, I highly recommend hosting or attending a board game night with your family or friends. Cards and dominoes are also highly entertaining with the right group of people.
Catch Up On Shows
If you just want to veg out on the couch (and trust me – I don’t blame you!), then this is for you. Cole and I watch several TV shows that we absolutely love, but we tend to get a little behind when classes are in session. The end of finals means that you can finally binge watch your favorite shows and get caught up in time for the spring premier! We just caught up with Once Upon a Time, which is a fantastic show, especially if you’re Disney fanatics like us. Also in our queue are Westworld and Designated Survivor (is it just me, or will Keifer Sutherland always be Jack Bauer?). Pop some popcorn or grab some candy and just relax!
Spend Some Quality Time With Family
Haven’t visited your parents in a while? Make an effort to go see them. Missing your siblings? Invite them over for dinner. Have kids? Take them to the park or have a Disney movie night. (Actually, that’s a good idea for all ages – maybe that should go onto our list as its own thing!) Haven’t loved on your pets enough lately? Throw a ball or a frisbee for the dogs, give your cats some extra scratches, and take your horse on a trail ride. Find ways to connect with all your loved ones, and remember to put down your phone!
Cook Actual Meals
Have you ever found yourself in the middle of studying when you look at the clock and realize that it’s midnight and you haven’t eaten yet? So have we. And before we moved into the country to a house that literally no restaurants deliver to, we ordered pizza… a lot. Too much, really. We probably should have invested in Domino’s at some point. Now that finals are over, though, you can forget those midnight pizza runs and limp 5-minute noodles (we’re looking at you, ramen). With time to cook, you can start looking for new recipes to try. Maybe they’ll even be healthy!
Start Exercising Again
Speaking of being healthy, we’re betting that exercise took a bit of a back seat to finals. And we get it – after all, you came back from an amazing Thanksgiving meal to immediately be plunged into finals week. If you’re lucky, you might have had a week or two between. Either way, it was crunch time, and we’re not talking about the ab workout. In the time you’ve got to kill now that you don’t have to study, you can go on a run or join a gym. Take the time to establish healthy habits now, and maybe they’ll stick around when school starts back up!
Well, there you have it – the seven things that Cole and I are excited to do now that finals are over and done with. Congratulations on getting through another semester – now go have some fun!
